good try. but phylogeny here can refer to both plants and
animals. basically, it's the construction of the tree of life.
where the branching of the tree indicates where speciation and
divergence took place. for instance, chimps and humans are more
closely related to each other than either is to gorilla. so the
terminal branches links chimp with humans, and a lower rank branch
link both chimps and humans to gorilla.
